History | Will ribeira of Caniço, which is thrown in the sea at this place, constituted the historical border between legations of the first governors of the Madeira, Teixeira (Machico) and Zarco (Funchal), and there were obviously at the border two communes having each one its patron saint. When the cutting of Madeira was removed, the two villages did nothing any more but one and after an earthquake had damaged the churches, one rebuilt, at the end of the 18th century, only one church which was placed under the patronage of the Holy Spirit and saint Antoine de Padoue. |
