PresentationPresentation

General presentationGeneral information
The small village is organized around the church, to 1 km below the road. In front of a great shaded place of plane trees, the frontage of the parish church, built in 1780, dissimulates a covered nave of a painted ceiling which is completed on a chorus baroque. The road continues beyond the esplanade and goes down towards the sea through units from villas to the gardens invaded from flowers.

SituationSituation

Dominating top the zone of holiday, its hotels and villas in the clear walls, Caniço seems stuck to the mountainside. Caniço (230 m of altitude) is located at 9 km east of Funchal.

C Garajau bridged
On the Cape Garajau draw up a large statue of the Christ-King the isolated arms (a counterpart in miniature of the statues of Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon), raised by a family of Madeira.

The view-point offers a beautiful sight, in the west, on bay of Funchal.

Caniço de Baixa
East of Caniço, a modern station, Caniço de Baixa, are built on a small headland. This station is very appreciated German holiday makers who, in addition to the courses of diving and the excursions guided in German, find there sacro-holy German beer at the restaurant.

History and traditionsHistory, literature, arts, traditions, legends, religions, myths, symbols…

HistoryHistory
Will ribeira of Caniço, which is thrown in the sea at this place, constituted the historical border between legations of the first governors of the Madeira, Teixeira (Machico) and Zarco (Funchal), and there were obviously at the border two communes having each one its patron saint. When the cutting of Madeira was removed, the two villages did nothing any more but one and after an earthquake had damaged the churches, one rebuilt, at the end of the 18th century, only one church which was placed under the patronage of the Holy Spirit and saint Antoine de Padoue.
EconomyEconomy
The inhabitants of Caniço traditionally live cultures of banana and cane with sugar.
