The park is discovered by borrowing alleys bordered of plane trees and camellias. Its gardens concentrate remarkable solid masses of rare flowers, lakes, as well as a beautiful pallet of exotic plants originating in South Africa, China and Australia. It floats there a peaceful atmosphere, favourable with the amazement of the five directions. Between Ladies’ Garden and its majestic trees, the tangle of the plants of the ravine of Inferno (the Hell) or the charming vault of style baroque, one does not know or to give head.

HistoryHistory
The quinta do Palheiro was built at the beginning of the 19th century by the first count de Carvalhal, João Esmeraldo; she is regarded as one of largest and most sumptuous the quintas of Madeira. In the first times of this quinta, the count imported species of trees coming from the whole world and it would seem that many rare specimens were offered to him by king D. João VI, like by commanders of its ships.

Since 1885 and until today, it is the property of the Blandy family.

Among the famous visitors of the quinta do Palheiro one finds the empress Léopoldine, first woman of Dom Pedro IV of Portugal, the infante Dom Luis, king Dom Carlos of Portugal and Dona Maria Amélia, as well as the prince of Edinburgh.
