Of a surface of more than eight hectares of grounds, the botanical garden presents many varieties of tropical and indigenous plants of Madeira, among which orchises, magniolias, azaleas, cactus, palm trees…

The garden comprises an vain house, with the French windows glazed, decorated flowers.

The Botanical garden has also a surface of research and conservation as well as a museum of natural history.

SituationSituation

The botanical garden is located at Quinta do Bom Sucesso, on the heights of Funchal, at an altitude of approximately 300 meters; the garden offers a unspoilable view on the ocean and the town of Funchal.

It is possible to reach it by the cable car.

The garden offers view-points on the site of the capital and the severe slopes of will ribeiras on the southern part of Madeira, cut out in terraces.

Teleférico do Jardim Botânico
The 1600 meters of the course of the line of the botanical garden are carried out with a height from 10 to 100 meters above ground. Its construction began in September 1999 to be completed in November 2000.

This cable car offers to the visitors a panoramic course with spectacular sights on bay of Funchal and the valley of Ribeira de João Gomes, a place of a rare beauty consisted a forest zone of laurisylve.

HistoryHistory
The quinta do Bom Sucesso was built in 1881 by the Reid family, which had been established in Madeira in the middle of the 19th century to open a hotel there; Reid designed these gardens like private park. Today, they belong to the State and are opened with the public.

It is in 1963 qu ’ one installed the Botanical garden there.
