The old town of Lindos in Rhodes. Click to enlarge the image.At the foot of the Acropolis, the old city of Lindos has retained many original elements of traditional architecture, an amalgam of styles Island, Byzantine, medieval and Arabic.

The streets of the old town
The village has perfectly preserved its medieval character with narrow streets filled with quaint cobblestone all "langues de chat", black and white mosaics with interesting designs, made of pebbles placed on the field.

From the Freedom Square, a single lane, the Odos Akropoleos leads the flow of visitors into the village where you can get lost easily in the maze of streets leading to the acropolis .

The houses of the old town

These homes generally have a courtyard paved with black and white pebbles forming designs, roof terrace, wrought iron balconies and window frames painted brown. They are characterized by a high wall and an arched entrance to the courtyard. At the bottom was the house consists of a large room divided by an arch supporting the roof. This architecture dates back to the seventeenth century and eighteenth century.

Many houses have retained their carved decoration on the doors and their beautiful traditional interior.

Fedra Moskoridis house in the old town of Lindos in Rhodes. Click to enlarge the image.Lindos is famous for its houses of captains and wealthy shipowners, richly decorated facades. These mansions are known by the name of their owner: the Chamber of Papakonstantis (1626), Kyriakos Koliodos, Lefteris Makris (1700), of Krikis (1700), Georgios, Marietta Markoulitsa (1700), and Ioannidis, etc ... The oldest is dated 1599. They kept their arch openings and gothic-inspired décor and eastern base of rosettes, plants, birds, interlaced.

With the advent of Neoclassicism in Greece at the end of the nineteenth century Lindos adopted some new architectural features: large windows facing the street, two-story houses with gable ...

Churches
At the center of the village is the church of Panagia (all holy) Holy Mary, (late fifteenth century), whose tower is decorated with the arms of Pierre d’Aubusson, and the interior is decorated with frescoes eighteenth century. The church bears the dates 1489-1490, but it is older, the Knights have redesigned and having added the western narthex ..

Agios Georgios Chostos is a cruciform church with a dome fitted in the north-west of the village. In the sanctuary, frescoes dating from the twelfth century.

The cruciform church dedicated to Agios Georgios Pachymachiotis or Pano, is dated 1394-1395 (south side). On the south wall of the church and the vault of the saints were painted clothing and luxurious part of the representation of the Ascension in the choir.

Agios Menas is a church of the same type that Chostos Agios Georgios. It was decorated with interesting frescoes in the style of the late twelfth century, but dated fifteenth.

Agios Demetrios is a small church located at the entrance to the Acropolis. It can be seen on the north wall a fresco of fifteenth-centuryAgios Demetrios on horseback.

Note also the small church of Agios Stephanos.

Note the presence of the picturesque harbor of Agios Pavlos and the little white chapel dedicated to the Apostle Paul, located in the Bay of Saint Paul.
