The Rural Park Teno is mainly formed of mountains of Teno and the areas surrounding it. It is the least urbanized area of the island of Tenerife.
The massif of Teno is one of the three oldest geological sectors in Tenerife, formed from the emissions of multiple lava flows. It’s one of those so-called "paleo Islands’ Tenerife because of its conditions of former mountain range, between five and seven million years, strongly modeled by erosion with deep incisions shaped ravines spectacular.
Due to its geographical position at the corner of the island, we appreciate an obvious difference of moisture, depending on the direction of the trade winds, the lower region shows greater aridity and more sunshine.
The park is characterized by the presence of volcanic reliefs of great beauty, which host a very diverse vegetation and a rich flora, with many endemic species, some of which are exclusive to the Park. Stand out especially laurel wood present at Monte del Agua and sides of Baracan.
Fauna
Regarding birds of prey, rural park of Teno is the last refuge for species such as osprey or fish eagle (Pandion haliaetus) and the Barbary falcon (Falco pelegrinoides).
The great wealth of fauna that welcomes the Massif de Teno was ratified by the statement from the European Union to this place as a Special Protection Area for Birds, and thanks to the discovery by science of new species, the spotted lizard.
