The village of Achada do Cedro Gordo is located on the northern slope of the island, abundantly sprinkled by the downpours, therefore very green and intensely cultivated, remain of important vestiges of the primitive forest. The wet winds of north saved it fire which devastated the island at the 15th century
Dimensions of certain trees surprise, in particular the bay-tree-reds (vinháticos), the ferns and the heathers, the cedars, and also the bushes of arborescent fuchsias.
On the terraces, the peasants practice the mixed-farming. they live in thatched cottages isolated enough the ones from the others. The winter, the craft industry (work of basket making and embroidery) brings an essential supplement.
