The Dunes Natural Park Maspalomas (Parque Natural de las Dunas de Maspalomas)
The Dunes Natural Park Maspalomas is a protected nature reserve.
The extraordinary dune landscape stretches over 8.5 km to a century-old lighthouse. The sight of these mountains of golden sand stretching to the horizon gives the impression that one is in an African desert. Camels carrying tourists complete the picture. The sand dunes more than 10 meters in height is not from the Sahara - as is often thought - but is sea-based and consists of finely ground shells.
The exceptional vegetation of the area was placed under protection. The strict regulations from 1987 that are découlés came just in time to save the lagoon nearby lake (La Charca de Maspalomas), which has in fact almost been a victim of the housing boom.
Many migratory birds find refuge in the oasis of palm trees surrounding the lake. The nature reserve, which includes today’s dunes, lagoon lake and the palm, is absolutely unique in the Canaries.
