Vela Luka, the large city of the island of Korčula is a port without attraction which does not have the charm of Korčula, but remains however a pleasant destination.
If it is not the chief town of the island, Vela Luka looked like “capital”, because it is, in any case, the greatest urban area, with its hotels, pensions, restaurants and center of cure, specialized in the rheumatic rehabilitation and diseases.
Vela Luka developed around its bay, at the beginning of the 19th century.
Economy
It is in Vela Luka that the largest nautical building sites were. Today the city saw mainly fishing. Its port abounds besides in fishing vessels often more modern than the traditional boats.
In spite of the surge of the estival travellers, the inhabitants therefore did not give up their traditional activities of it: fishing and agriculture, without forgetting the shipyard and a canning facility of fish.
Traditions
